Drummer and composer Tim Kuhl is at it again. King is a follow-up to Kuhl’s highly entertaining Ghost. But while it would have been difficult to review the music on Ghost for inclusion on a fusion website such as Pulsar Sound because it was mostly straight-ahead, no such problem exists for King. Most of what is heard on King fits right in with the jazz jam band scene. The opening cut, which just so happens to be the title number, is a jam-bander’s fantasy. Kuhl’s insistent rhythms and strong backbeats encase a group effort that finds itself stuck deep in a groove rut 30 feet deep. Nir Felder’s guitar helped led the band into that nasty pit and it will energetically lead it out. Saxophonist Jon Irabagon cooks. King is full of fusion grunge, ingratiating hooks, mesmerizing and sometimes convoluted melodies and the occasional straight forward and progressive jazz. Head bobbing is mandatory for this outing. As a side note, I always admire a guy with the gonads to name an album something like King. It denotes a great confidence. – Walter Kolosky
